When Jealousy Takes Root

πŸ“– Genesis 37:11 (NKJV)

And his brothers envied him, but his father kept the matter in mind.

My Dear Children,

After Joseph shared his dreams, his brothers became increasingly jealous of him. At first, jealousy may have seemed like a small feeling in their hearts, but it did not remain small. Over time, it grew into resentment, hatred, and harmful actions.

What many people overlook is that jealousy rarely begins with hatred. It often starts when we focus too much on what someone else has instead of appreciating what God has given us.

The Bible warns in Proverbs 14:30 that β€œenvy is rottenness to the bones.” Jealousy harms the person who carries it. It steals joy, damages relationships, and clouds good judgment.

James 3:16 also teaches, β€œFor where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.” The brothers’ jealousy eventually led them to make choices they would regret for many years.

Joseph’s dreams were part of God’s plan, but his brothers viewed them through the lens of comparison rather than faith.

Relevance to Life and Family

It is easy to compare ourselves with others, their talents, achievements, possessions, or opportunities. But comparison often steals contentment.

Families grow stronger when each member learns to celebrate the success of others instead of competing against them.

Family Reflection

How did jealousy grow in the hearts of Joseph’s brothers?
Why is comparison dangerous?
How can we learn to celebrate the blessings God gives to others?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, protect our hearts from jealousy and comparison. Help our family appreciate the blessings You have given each of us. Teach us to rejoice with others and trust Your unique plan for our lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
