What Others Meant for Evil, God Meant for Good

πŸ“– Genesis 50:20 (NKJV)
β€œBut as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.”

My Dear Children,

After many years, Joseph's brothers stood before him in Egypt. They were afraid. They remembered what they had doneβ€”throwing him into a pit, selling him as a slave, and deceiving their father. They expected Joseph to seek revenge.

Instead, Joseph saw something much bigger than their actions. He recognized that while his brothers had evil intentions, God had been working through every event to accomplish His greater purpose.

What many people overlook is that Joseph did not say their actions were good. He acknowledged that they had sinned. But he also recognized that God's sovereign hand was greater than human wrongdoing. God did not cause their sin, but He used the circumstances to preserve Jacob's family during the famine and to fulfill His covenant promises.

Romans 8:28 echoes this truth: β€œAnd we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”

Joseph also chose forgiveness over revenge. Instead of paying back evil for evil, he comforted his brothers and spoke kindly to them (Genesis 50:21). A heart that trusts God's plan has room to forgive.

Relevance to Life and Family

Families sometimes experience hurt, disappointment, and misunderstandings. We cannot always control what happens to us, but we can choose how we respond.

Like Joseph, we can trust that God is able to bring good even out of painful situations. Forgiveness does not erase the past, but it allows God to bring healing and restoration.

Family Reflection

  • What helped Joseph forgive his brothers?
  • What does Genesis 50:20 teach us about God's sovereignty?
  • Is there a difficult experience our family can place into God's hands today?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You that You are greater than every difficulty we face. Help our family trust that You are working even through painful situations. Give us hearts that forgive, hope that endures, and faith that sees Your good purposes. May we always rest in Your wisdom and love. In Jesus' name, Amen.
