Don't Let Your Past Decide Your Future.
π Joshua 6:25 (NKJV)
"And Joshua spared Rahab the harlot, her father's household, and all that she had. So she dwells in Israel to this day..."
My Dear Children,
When the Israelites finally captured Jericho, Rahab and everyone inside her house were spared, exactly as the spies had promised.
But there is something beautiful in the words "So she dwells in Israel to this day."
Rahab was no longer simply the woman who lived in Jericho. She had been brought into the community of God's people.
Her past was real. The Bible does not pretend otherwise. But her past was not the end of her story.
Rahab's story becomes even more remarkable when we look beyond Joshua. Matthew 1:5 tells us that Rahab became the mother of Boaz. Boaz became the father of Obed, Obed became the father of Jesse, and Jesse became the father of King David. Rahab therefore became part of the family line through which Jesus Christ came.
What a transformation.
1 Corinthians 6:11 says, "And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus."
Isaiah 43:18β19 also reminds us, "Do not remember the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing."
God's grace does not deny our past. It gives us the opportunity to live differently because of what He is doing in our lives.
Relevance to Life and Family
Sometimes people carry labels for years. Someone may say, "That is just how you are," because of something you did in the past.
But if God can transform Rahab's story, He can transform ours too.
We should also be careful not to keep reminding people of mistakes they have genuinely repented of. If God is giving someone a new beginning, we should not continually drag them back into their old life.
Family Reflection
- What changed in Rahab's life after Jericho?
- Why is it wrong to define someone only by their past?
- How can our family encourage people who are trying to make a new beginning with God?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your transforming grace. Help us not to be prisoners of our past mistakes or to hold the past mistakes of others against them. Give us the courage to become the people You are calling us to be. May our family always make room for repentance, restoration, and new beginnings. In Jesus' name, Amen.
