A House Full of Gifts, Yet Full of Struggles (Jacobs Family)
π Genesis 35:10 (NKJV)
βAnd God said to him, βYour name is Jacob; your name shall not be called Jacob anymore, but Israel shall be your name.β So He called his name Israel.β
My Dear Children,
Jacob's family would become one of the most important families in the Bible. From his sons would come the twelve tribes of Israel, and generations later, the Messiah would come through this family line.
Yet what many people overlook is that Jacob's family was not perfect. They had jealousy, favoritism, deception, rivalry, grief, and conflict. Despite this, God continued working through them.
One important lesson is that God changed Jacob's name from Jacob ("supplanter" or "deceiver") to Israel. This reminds us that God is in the business of transforming lives.
2 Corinthians 5:17 teaches, βIf anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.β God does not define us by our past mistakes but by what He is making us become.
Another overlooked truth is that God's promises continued even through family imperfections. God's faithfulness is greater than human weakness.
Relevance to Life and Family
Sometimes families can become discouraged because they see weaknesses, mistakes, or struggles within the home. Jacob's family reminds us that God does not require a perfect family before He begins His work.
God can shape ordinary families into instruments for His purpose when they continue to seek Him.
Family Reflection
Why was Jacob's name changed to Israel?
What does this teach us about God's power to change people?
How can our family cooperate with God's work of transformation?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You that You are able to transform lives. Help our family not to be discouraged by our weaknesses but to trust Your power to change us. Continue Your work in our hearts and make us more like You each day. In Jesusβ name, Amen.
